Food > Music : New Norm in Austin,Texas
It’s no surprise that tourists flock to Austin, Texas specifically, and sometimes solely for the live music. While that may have been true at some point, the new tourists to Austin seem to be thinking with their noses and mouths instead of their ears.
A recent twitter poll asked users “what would be the biggest reason they would visit Austin, Texas” The poll had four options; food, live music, nightlife, or nature. The results were somewhat surprising, after the 5 days the poll was posted, most people want to go to Austin for the food. With many other cities like Nashville, and New Orleans claiming to be the ‘live music capital’, Austin seems to be shifting its tourism industry to be more food-focused.
The twitter poll, by whatspoppinAustin, found that 30 percent of participants would travel to Austin for the live music, but 60 percent would actually travel to the city for the food scene. As a tourist in the eclectic city, I actually found there to be much more of an emphasis on food and the hundreds of amazing food trucks as opposed to live music.
With Austin Texas becoming one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, the demand seems to focus more on restaurants and food rather than live music. It is truly becoming more and more difficult to find live music on any given day , disappointing tourists seeking to hear some of the so-called “best” live music.
By shifting the focus to restaurants and food trucks, Austin is becoming a foodie paradise. Southern- Asian fusion joints are seeming to pop-up all over town with major successes. Places like The Peached Tortilla and Loro are becoming the happening spots on a Friday and Saturday night instead of one of the many local bars with live music. There is a strive for a better sense of community with all the newest residents that sitting around a bar talking and eating instead of listening to music is more appealing.
